Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Overview:

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a secure, encrypted network connection typically used to connect from a third-party Internet Service Provider (ISP) to a Penn State network-restricted service and/or resource. VPN software is used to establish a secure connection with a Penn State resource or service from off-campus. Encryption and other security mechanisms ensure only authorized users access the network and secured data. VPNs are used to:

  • Secure connections between Penn State and a remote ISP. Connections made from a third-party ISP to a non-.psu.edu domain may not be protected.
  • Access Penn State resources restricted to a Penn State-only IP address.

Getting Started:

You can find out more about Penn State VPN's and how to install them by visiting the IT Knowledge Base's VPN entry.

More Information:

The GlobalProtect VPN is a full tunnel VPN compared to the previous split-tunnel Cisco Anyconnect. The difference is that on GlobalProtect all the traffic leaving your GlobalProtect connected workstation is encrypted en route to the GlobalProtect gateway, then traverses through the PSU network to the Internet.
